Meek Mill é um rapper da Philadelphia, mesma terra da qual diversos rappers da Rocafella, como o Beanie Sigel, Freeway, Young Chris e Peedi Crakk. Todos esses rappers são conhecidos pela energia deles nas musicas e pelas rimas, inteligentes e que trazem muito do que se passa nas ruas para os seus ouvintes. Meek Mill é o descendente desses rappers, e ele apesar de seguir a receita e tradição estabelecida pelos caras que eu citei, leva tudo isso a um novo nivel, pós-Roc.
No começo do ano passado ele foi assinado pelo Rick Ross pra fazer parte da sua gravadora, a Maybach Music, cujo contrato ele tinha acabado de assinar junto com a Warner Bros. Até lá ele era pouco conhecido pelo publico em geral, mas ele já era muito bem considerado nas ruas de Philly. O potencial dele no enquanto foi completamente desenvolvido junto do co-sign do Rozay. Foi lançado um album em grupo da gravadora, o Self Made Vol. 1 que teve dois dos maiores hits do ano passado, Tupac Back e I'ma Boss, que mostravam exatamente como o talento do Meek fazia sentido junto do Rozay. O fato de, aliado a esses dois hits, ele ter lançado uma das melhores mixtapes do ano passado, Dreamchasers, fez com que ele fosse considerado já entre os grandes do rap no que diz respeito a talento, flow, criatividade e etc.
Tudo isso fez com que o perfil e a fama do Meek aumentasse muito, e todos esperavam a continuação da sua bem sucedida mixtape, que veio na forma dessa que dá nome ao post. Ela fez com que houvesse um crash nos servidores do DatPiff.com, o site especializado em mixtapes na qual foi lançada, e atualmente conta com mais de 2 milhões de downloads, recorde no site.
Enfim, falei muito sobre o perfil e a história do Meek, mas a mixtape faz jus a tudo isso? Eu gostaria de dizer que sim, mas a questão é meio complexa. Como continuação da primeira Dreamchasers ela funciona muito bem, pois tem musicas que aprofundam e expandem o que aquela mixtape apresentou. A mixtape foi produzida por produtores como o Beat Bully, All Star, Jahlil Beats e Cardiak e você consegue encontrar vários street bangers que ninguém faz como o Meek, como as musicas Burn, com o Big Sean, e
A1 Everything, com o Kendrick Lamar, aliados a musicas em que o Meek explora um lado diferente dele, como
Amen, com o Drake, e o freestyle em cima de The Ride. O grau de energia, o nivel das letras e a seleção das batidas está num nivel mais alto que boa parte dos lançamentos de ultimamente, porém musicas como Take U Home e a adição de versos de alguns rappers do momento, como o Mac Miller e o seu parceiro de gravadora Wale, quebram a sequencia da mixtape e acabam por estragar um pouco o momento. Claro que você pode simplesmente deletá-las da sequencia e isso melhora em muito a qualidade da mixtape como um todo, mas ainda acho que para quem quer conhecer mesmo o som do Meek Mill e observar o potencial dele, a
Dreamchasers original é aonde deve-se começar. Mesmo assim, recomendo muitissimo essa mixtape, ela tem várias musicas muito boas e merece um espaço no seu hard drive e no seu iPod. Para ouvi-la e baixá-la é só clicar abaixo.

All of these rappers where known for the energy of their music and for their fast and intelligent rhymes and flows that brought to the listeners what was happening in the streets of their city. Meek is a descendant of this rappers and can be considered a post-Roc Philly rapper, and even though follows their recipe and tradition, he brings it to a whole 'nother level.
In the beginning of 2011, Rick Ross signed him to his newly inaugurated label, Maybach Music, which he signed, along with his own contract, to Warner Bros. Until then Meek Mill wasn't really well known, but he had major respect in the streets of the city where he came from. His potencial had the opportunity to rise along with the Rozay co-sign though, and on the first album released through the label, the Self Made Vol. 1 compilation, he shined with two of 2011 biggest rap hits, Tupac Back and I'ma Boss, which showed exactly how much talent he had and how much sense it made pairing him with Ross. The fact that, along with this two hits, he released one of last year best mixtapes, Dreamchasers, made everyone that listen to rap put him on the same level as the big guns in the game right now.
All of this made Meek's fame and profile rise a lot. The anticipation for the Dreamchasers follow up was so big that when the mixtape that originated this post got released, it crashed DatPiff.com, a mixtape hosting website in which it was released. It has, in this moment, over 2 million downloads alone and is the most downloaded mixtape in the website history.
I talked a lot about Meek Mill's profile and history, but what about the mixtape? Is it worth all this hype? I'd like to say yes, but the question is a bit complex for such a simple answer. As a continuation to the original Dreamchasers, it works very well, and Meek gets to expand the concept he originally conceived. The tape was produced by the likes of All Star, The Beat Bully, Jahlil Beats, Cardiak and others, and in the tape you can see street bangers in the way only Meek does nowadays, such as Burn with Big Sean and
A1 Everything with Kendrick Lamar, along with songs in which Meek explores a different side of his craft, like
Amen, with Drake, and the freestyle over The Ride. Although the energy, lyrical and beat selection level of the songs in the tape are in one of the biggest levels in the game right now, songs such as Take U Home and others that have verses by some pop rappers that are famous right now, such as Mac Miller and his labelmate Wale, kinda break the mood of the mixtape and spoil it a bit. Of course you can correct this mixtape by simply deleting this songs, but I still think if you wanna see Meek in his full potential, the original
Dreamchasers is still a better choice than this one.
